1236 The CHUV's origins date back to the 13th century. Aymon of Savoy, Lord of Agaune, and Lord of Chablais founded the Maison-Dieu and the hospice of Villeneuve.
1277-1279 In Lausanne, the Notre Dame Hospital, or "Grand Hôpital," dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built in the Cité-Dessous, the current location of the Gymnase de la Mercerie.
1806 Bought by the Council of State in 1806, the Notre Dame Hospital became the "Cantonal Hospital." It had some 100 beds and housed patients with serious illnesses, the insane, and prisoners.
1867 The establishment decided to transfer the Hospice for the Insane from Champ de l'Air to a new hospice to be built in Bois de Cery.
1883 The Bugnon Cantonal Hospital was inaugurated on March 19, 1883. It consisted of the old main building, the "Château."
1890 The Academy's Institute of Medicine, composed of the chairs of medicine and surgery, becomes the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lausanne. An auditorium is set up for students admitted to the sick's bedside.
1935 The Nestlé Hospital was inaugurated and financed by the canton and the Nestlé and Anglo-Swiss Holding Company Ltd. It was expanded in the early 1960s.
1990 The Council of State decided to create a new entity bringing together cantonal health establishments (somatic and psychiatric), university health institutes, and cantonal schools for training in health professions. It chose to take up this group, which would become operational in 1991, the name of Cantonal Hospice Service.
1999 The Department of Laboratory Medicine was created. It consisted of the Institute of Microbiology and several laboratories that brought together many specialties.
2006 The Adult Intensive Care Service, resulting from the merger of Medical and Surgical Intensive Care, was attached to the Department of Interdisciplinary Centers.
2007 The University Institutes of Forensic Medicine of Geneva and Lausanne were merged to create the Romand University Center for Forensic Medicine.
2016 The first Patient Hotel in Switzerland was opened in the CHUV. It welcomes independent patients who benefit from healthcare services while being cared for in hotel conditions.
2019 CHUV and HUG inaugurate their joint logistics platform PLEXUS-Santé in Bussigny.
2021 In 2021, CHUV acquired a Da Vinci surgical robot, which increased the quality of minimally invasive surgery.
2023 CHUV launched a new cellular immunotherapy to treat acute myeloid leukemia in children and adults.
