Company Overview

Climeworks AG, founded in 2009, specializes in CDR through DAC technology. Its DAC technology captures CO₂ directly from the air by using 100% renewable energy, energy-from-waste, or other waste heat as energy sources to reduce the carbon concentration in the environment. It also offers carbon dioxide removal services for businesses and individuals by combining DAC and permanent underground storage. After capturing the CO2 from the atmosphere, the company transfers it to its storage partner “Crabfix,” to store the captured CO2 underground for more than 10,000 years. Climeworks operated the world’s first DAC+S facility, and since its foundation, the company has commercialized more than 15 DAC facilities across the globe.

The company operates through its global facilities, which include the following.

  • Capricon was established in Hinwil, Zurich, Switzerland, in 2017. It is the first industrial-scale DAC plant. The plant is FSSC 22000 certified and certified by The Coca-Cola Company. This plant is capable of capturing several hundred tons of carbon dioxide from the air every year with the help of its 18 CO₂ collectors.
  • Arctic Fox, Iceland, established in 2017, is the world’s first combined DAC and storage facility. It has a capacity to capture up to 50 tons of CO2 every year. It uses the geothermal power supplied from nearby geothermal power plants.
  • Orca, established in September 2021, aimed at scaling up the company’s carbon dioxide removal capacities. It has a capture capacity of up to 4,000 tons of CO2 every year. It is the world’s largest DAC+S plant.
  • Mammoth, established in June 2022, is located in Hellisheidi, Iceland. It is the company’s largest AC+S plant, aiming to scale up multi-megaton capacity by 2030 and gigaton capacity by 2050. Once fully operational, the plant has a carbon capture capacity of up to 36,000 tons per year.
