HAL manufactures light utility helicopters (LUHs), light combat helicopters (LCHs), intermediate jet trainers (IJTs), light combat aircraft (LCA), multi-role transport aircraft (MTA), weapon system integration on ALH, fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) and basic turboprop trainers. The company is focused on designing and developing medium thrust engines.

Recognizing the potential and growing demand for drones, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has signed memorandums of understanding with academic institutions, most notably the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)—Kanpur and Chennai, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, for jointly conducting research in the areas of aerospace transmission systems, micro UAVs and aero elastic codes for helicopter rotor vibrator load prediction. The Indian government has recommended the creation of a Design and Development Management Board under the Chairman of HAL, with associates from various R&D labs from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Defense Research and Development Organization, to strengthen its R&D resources in aviation.
