Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is involved in the development, manufacture and supply of engines, aircraft and helicopters. It offers helicopters, aircraft and power plants, as well as avionics, including auto stabilizers, inertial navigation systems, laser-range systems, head-up displays, communication equipment, flight data recorders, airborne secondary radars, radio navigation equipment, missile inertial navigation systems, ground radars and radar computers. The company also offers systems and accessories, including hydraulic systems, wheels, brake systems, ejector release units, flight control systems, gyroscopic and barometric instruments, panel instruments, oxygen systems hydraulic pumps and fuel management systems. The company’s products cater to the demands of defense services, border security forces, coastal guards and civil markets both in India and globally.

HAL manufactures light utility helicopters (LUHs), light combat helicopters (LCHs), intermediate jet trainers (IJTs), light combat aircraft (LCA), multi-role transport aircraft (MTA), weapon system integration on ALH, fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) and basic turboprop trainers. The company is focused on designing and developing medium thrust engines.

Recognizing the potential and growing demand for drones, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has signed memorandums of understanding with academic institutions, most notably the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)—Kanpur and Chennai, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, for jointly conducting research in the areas of aerospace transmission systems, micro UAVs and aero elastic codes for helicopter rotor vibrator load prediction. The Indian government has recommended the creation of a Design and Development Management Board under the Chairman of HAL, with associates from various R&D labs from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Defense Research and Development Organization, to strengthen its R&D resources in aviation.
