Company Overview

Inframat is a privately owned nanotechnology company founded in 1996. The company’s best-known product is its Nanox 2613, an elastic alumina/titania ceramic coating, the first commercial ceramic nanocomposite. Nanox was initially developed with funding from the U.S. Navy, which uses it in demanding marine applications such as coating submarine air intakes and exhaust valves. The coatings also have many potential commercial applications, including use in the mining, paper, pulp and marine transportation sectors.

Inframat has developed various advanced technologies in hard metals (tungsten carbide/cobalt and its alloys) that enable exceptional hardness in end products, including these materials, without a concomitant loss in fracture toughness. This performance edge is achieved by an essential innovation in alloying proprietary grain growth inhibitors with tungsten carbide/cobalt powders, both for nanostructured WC/Co and superfine WC/Co.

Inframat is also developing magnetic nanocomposites (e.g., Ni-Fe/SiO2, Co/SiO2, Fe-Co/SiO2, Fe/nickel-ferrite, Ni-Zn-ferrite/SiO2, Fe-Ni/ polymer, and copolymer) for use in high frequency (>1 MHz) electronic devices from radar, satellite, and telecommunication systems to home radio stereos. This development work has been partly funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy. Inframat has sought a commercialization partner for this technology.
