NICHIA CORP.
Company Snapshot
Company Overview
Nichia was created in 1956 to produce high-purity calcium salts under the name Nichia Chemical Industries. Nearly 10 years later, the company began manufacturing phosphors for fluorescent lamps, and since then, its business has grown to include fabrication of LEDs, laser diodes, optical semiconductor devices, fine chemicals, evaporation materials, magnetic materials and battery materials.
Nichia is one of the world’s top three producers of LEDs. Its light-emitting diodes are used for general lighting, specialty lighting, displays and automotive products. They include single chip and multi-chip packages, as well as high-brightness devices.
Nichia also offers mini-LEDs for backlights. The company sells Light Cluster Type J devices for desktop monitors, Type V devices for use in ultra-thin LCD panels (e.g., notebooks, tablets) and Type M devices for smartphones and other portable devices. These products can generate light with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits for the entire screen and 2,000 nits locally, have reduced power consumption and are fabricated through a high-yield process.
To meet increasing demand for mini-LEDs, the company plans to expand its production capacity from 50,000 chips per month to 200,000 chips per month before the end of 2021.
Nichia is also working on the development of micro-LEDs with the plan to start production in 2022. In 2019, the company announced a partnership with Infineon Technologies (Neubiberg, Germany), a supplier of driver integrated circuits, to manufacture high-definition modules comprising more than 16,000 micro-LEDs for automotive front lighting.
