Sony Biotechnology, formerly iCyt Mission Technology, was founded in 1995. Its name changed in 2010 when Sony Corp. of America (SCA) acquired iCyt. Sony Biotechnology is a leading provider of flow cytometry products, including instruments and reagents. Its flow cytometry instruments portfolio includes spectral analyzers, cell sorters and cellular imaging solutions.

Sony Biotechnology launched the first commercial spectral flow cytometer in 2012 (2024 Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.). The spectral cell analyzers utilize Sony’s proprietary laser optics technology to collect and amplify light. Sony’s patented spectral technology supports the detection of more than 44 colors and autofluorescence signals from six lasers and 182 photomultiplier (PMT) detectors.
