Supercapacitor Industry Surging at 19.4% in 2019; Electronic Sector Highly Influencing the Market Shares
March 18, 2015
Wellesley, Mass., March 18, 2015 –BCC Research reveals in its new report on supercapacitors, the global market has been growing at a very fast pace during the last decade and is projected to be valued at approximately $873 million by the end of 2014 and to continue to expand at a healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.4% through 2019.
Supercapacitors (also known as electrical double-layer capacitors or EDLCs) are devices capable of storing and releasing energy. They are characterized by a very high capacitance value, measurable from microfarads to kilofarads. Although the most popular type is based on carbon electrodes, other supercapacitors are commercially available with polymeric or metal oxide electrodes, in asymmetric configurations or in the form of hybrid devices.
Revenue growth for supercapacitors is being driven primarily by the utilization of these devices in the electronics sector for manufacturing various portable and handheld devices, such as mobile phones, tablet and notebook computers, digital cameras and other audio/video products. The electronics sector is estimated to account for 52.2% of all revenues in 2014.
“The increased market penetration of these products can be attributed to various factors. Includes rising demand for portable, handheld and wearable electronics; growing use of EDLCs in the automotive and renewable energy sectors; improved properties due to the utilization of new materials; and more competitive pricing,” says BCC Research analyst Margareth Gagliardi.
Although the origins of supercapacitors can be traced back to the year 1745, when the first electrostatic capacitor was created, the first commercial product was introduced much more recently, in 1978. Since then, various EDLC configurations have entered the market to satisfy the varying needs of an increasing number of industries.
Supercapacitors: Technology Developments and Global Markets presents a current assessment of the EDLC industry from both a technological and a market point of view and to outline future trends and key developments.
