Global MBR Market Flowing at 12.8% CAGR as New Applications, Environmental Regs Push Growth

Membrane bioreactor systems (MBRs) have emerged as an effective solution to transforming various wastewaters into high-quality effluent suitable for discharge to the environment and increasingly into a reusable product. BCC Research reveals in its new report that during the next five years, sewage treatment will continue to be the primary use for MBR systems.

The global market for membrane bioreactor systems totaled $425.7 million in 2014 and is projected to approach $777.7 million by 2019, registering a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.8%. As the largest segment, North America totaled $174.8 million in 2014 and should total $306.3 million in 2019, with a CAGR of 11.9%. Asia-Pacific, the fastest-growing region, reached $121.5 million in 2014 and should reach $270.6 million by 2019, with a CAGR of 17.4%. In all regions, issues of water quality, water quantity, and aging or non-existing infrastructure are driving market growth.

As MBR technology sees rising demand in North America and around the globe, the number of installations is expected to increase steadily.  In the U.S. and other world regions, where wastewater treatment infrastructure lags behind population growth, MBRs will be increasingly implemented to make up the shortfall. Because of their small footprint, MBRs offer the potential to meet the needs of communities seeing increased flows but lacking sites to locate treatment plants.

For emerging countries with vast areas lacking sewer connections, MBR technology is increasingly providing a decentralized, robust, and cost-effective treatment for achieving high-quality effluent. MBRs also offer excellent retrofit capability for expanding or upgrading existing conventional wastewater treatment plants.
