Company Overview

Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI) was founded in 1888 by Shinji Shimomura. The company is a leading machinery manufacturing company that serves various segments including machinery components, precision machinery, construction machinery, industrial machinery, ships, environmental facilities and plants and others.

The industrial machinery segment of Sumitomo Heavy Industries deals with medical devices, cyclotrons, vacuum coating equipment, proton therapy systems, forging presses, material handling systems, forklifts and others. The SHI Group delivered its first proton therapy system to the National Cancer Center Hospital East in 1997. The systems developed by SHI are based on cyclotrons. Their new compact systems are based on the flexible layout, where the cyclotron is placed on top of the gantry, which helps to save space.

In February 2019, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan commenced proton therapy using SHI’s proton therapy system. This system features a new technology, i.e., the Fast Scanning Layer Switching that enables the system to decrease 80% of layer switching time compared with the original system, and lighten the burden of patients. Another system was also installed at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan.
