INTRODUCTION

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Electronic components are essential to industries such as computers, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and many others.  Electronic components form electronic circuitry, and are used or manufactured in the electronics field, which is the study of electrical devices used for controlling electrically charged particles or the flow of electrons to execute any electrical operation.

Electronic components are also increasingly used in industries such as automotive, medical electronics, aerospace, and defense.  Growth in electronic components is tied to the development of technologies and innovations in the electronics industry.  Each sector is driven by a key trend that stimulates the growth of the industry.  Demand in the telecommunications industry is tied to the expansion of the communications network across the world.  The increasing adoption and transition toward 3G/4G technologies and increasing bandwidth in Internet communication have increased the need for electronic devices, thereby leading to the growth of electronic components.

In the consumer electronics sector, growing acceptance and increasing usage of digital entertainment are widespread across the globe.  In addition, consumer products such as digital cameras, portable music players, gaming consoles, and so on have contributed to the growth of the electronic products industry.  Development in the area of personal computers, such as desktop PCs and laptops, has contributed a major share of growth in the electronics industry.  With new software continually being introduced, compatible systems to run the software are required which leads to innovation in new processors and other system components.

In the automotive industry, greater adoption of electronic components such as global positioning systems (GPS), enhanced sound systems, car entertainment, and parking and driver assistant systems have led to the increased growth of the electronics industry.  Miniaturization and increased functionality with greater performance are the key factors that drive the electronic components market in the aerospace and defense industry.  In the medical electronics field, there is a significant increase of electronic equipment in clinics and hospitals used for the early detection of health-related issues and for effective treatments and cure.

The introduction of sophisticated electronic components has rapidly increased the range of end-user markets.  Additionally, the use of passive components by integrated circuits is also increasing.  Each integrated circuit has an average of 20 passive components and increased usage of passives in integrated circuits is expected to continue.

This report will also study the global market for the various electronic components and their applications.  The markets for these components and their applications have become very competitive; thus, this report will examine the nature of the competition and the region-wide breakdown of these markets.

REASONS FOR DOING THIS STUDY

To succeed in a market, electronic component manufacturing companies must understand the market.  They must also know who their competitors are, how the market as a whole is performing, and what is selling and what is not.  In addition, they must know where market opportunities lie.  This report provides important information on the current size and anticipated growth of the overall market and market segments, characteristics of the market, leading suppliers, trends in customer preference, and geographic market opportunities.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

This study covers the electronic components used in various electronic products, various traditional and new applications, and the global markets for these components and applications.  The report will be useful to the following market participants:

  • Manufacturers of active electronic components
  • Manufacturers of electronic products using these active electronic components
  • Design and application engineers
  • Various industries needing active electronic components

SCOPE AND FORMAT

The scope of this report is the global market for active electronic components.  A variety of factors were considered in forecasting the market, including the underlying economic growth of the overall market and growth rates reported by manufacturers and users of electronic components.

The report also examines the global market for the various active electronic components.  Because the prices of electronic components will continue to fall, making the market for these components very competitive, this study will examine the nature of the competition and offer a regional breakdown of this market.

In addition, a forecast of the global markets for these active electronic components through 2017 is provided.  Recent advances in active electrical component technology have facilitated and accelerated varied applications for industrial as well as nonindustrial uses in the near future.  This report investigates the present global market for these various applications and provides a realistic forecast of their growth.

The major objective of this report is to determine the worldwide market for active electronic components and its growth potential during the next 5 years.  Profiles of global manufacturers are provided with a discussion of the global competition.  An analysis of patents issued to various companies for related technologies and processes is also provided in this study.  Forecasts take into account product and technology life cycles.

The information in this report has been provided in a simple-to-understand and easy-to-grasp format.  Necessary figures regarding global sales and the forecast of electronic components for both the industrial and nonindustrial sectors are provided as easy-to-read figures and tables.

INFORMATION SOURCES

Both primary and secondary research methodologies were used in preparing this study.  Market data resulted from telephone interviews with manufacturers, end users, as well as from searches of company literature and online sources.  Production data from various segments of the industry was obtained from sources within these industries and from the balance sheets of a number of companies.  Forecasts are based on a variety of factors, including technology developments, commercial realities, product/technology life cycles, and regional economic growth factors.

A wide variety of primary and secondary sources were used.  Primary information sources include individuals within companies, various research organizations, governmental agencies, and trade associations.  Additional secondary research sources include databases, trade literature, specialized journals, and government statistics.

Market data on the electronic components had to be reconciled due to diverse sources and variations.  Data presented are historically consistent, but may differ from other sources.  Variances occur due to definitional differences, undistributed exports, inventory accumulation, and goods-in-transit.  A potential for statistical discrepancy, on a country-by-country basis, is the conversion from national currencies to the U.S. dollar.
