INTRODUCTION

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The major goal of BCC Research in conducting this study is to present the status of the electronic display industry for 2008 and then examine its growth potential to 2009 and then to 2014. We last studied this industry in 2005 and were particularly interested in the impact on the market brought about by improvements in electronic display technologies and the availability of additional flat panel models for various applications.

The key objective is to present a comprehensive analysis of the current market for electronic displays and project the industry’s future direction.

REASONS FOR DOING THIS STUDY

The cathode ray tube (CRT) had been the dominant technology in displays for many years, but flat panel models have overtaken the CRT, particularly in desktop computer applications and other situations where space is an important consideration. We were interested in the potential of various flat panel models to displace the CRT for various consumer, industrial, commercial and medical applications.

We were also interested in displays for mobile and handheld devices that have grown considerably since our last study. As information migrates away from a central source, a display has to follow and we wanted to assess the technology to see what types of products and technologies are being used.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

We have compiled a study of the CRT and seven flat panel industries including emerging display technologies. We present the display industry economic environment, technological information and issues, research and development activities, recent patent activity, funding issues, applications, market assessment factors and potential, and then project unit shipments and their value for 2009 and 2014. This study will be of interest to display manufacturers, component makers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), distributors and systems integrators. It will also be of interest to manufacturers of information systems, personal computers, televisions, digital cameras and other consumer electronic products, instrumentation, telecommunications equipment, appliances, transportation equipment, and medical devices.

SCOPE OF REPORT

The scope of this study encompasses the major types of electronic displays. BCC Research analyzes the display industry structure, identifies the key players and analyzes the industry’s competitiveness. Then, for each display technology, we determine its current status, examine the impact on future markets, and present forecasts for growth from 2008 to 2009 and the over the 5 year period from 2009 to 2014. Technological issues, including the latest trends, are discussed. Other influential factors, such as display size and space savings, mobility, and performance levels are reviewed.

BCC analyzes the industry on a worldwide basis, both from a manufacturing and consumption point of view. We examine government and industry support for research and development in the major regions of the world. We also analyze market share for unit shipments and their value for each type of display.

METHODOLOGY

BCC Research presents an analysis of the units shipped for 2008 for each major type of display technology. Our estimated value is what manufacturers have paid in non-depreciated U.S. dollars. Based on our surveys, we analyze the potential growth of each display and then forecast shipments for 2009 and 2014. We also analyze pricing trends and establish shipment values for 2008, and project those for 2009 and 2014.

INFORMATION SOURCES

We interviewed approximately 135 companies to obtain data for this study. Included were manufactures of CRTs and flat panel displays, consumer products, communication systems, medical devices, instrumentation, and transportation equipment. We also spoke with manufacturers of emerging displays and their components such as MEMS (micro-electrical mechanical systems), carbon nanotubes and other nanotechnology-based products. We also spoke with display users in a variety of industries and compiled data from current financial/trade information such as trade publications and financial reports and government sources.

ANALYST CREDENTIALS

Bob Moran has worked as a technology market analyst and technology writer for more than 20 years, and is the author of numerous BCC Research Reports. He has authored reports covering thin film deposition, photovoltaic/solar technology, electronic gaming, magnetic and optical storage, surface modification of polymers and other technology topics. He has also served as the editor of BCC Research publications including Display Industry News and Micro and Nanotechnology.
