Been Quarantined for Too Long? Social Robots Will Soon Keep You Company

A New Category of Robots Has Arrived

June 16, 2020

The global market for social robots will reach $643 million by 2025, growing 15.6% annually, according to the latest report by BCC Research, Social Robots: Emotional Connection and Task Engagements.

Like most robots, social robots use artificial intelligence to decide how to act on information received through cameras and sensors. The ability to respond in ways that seem life-like has been informed by research into such issues as how perceptions form; what constitutes social and emotional intelligence; and how people can deduce others’ thoughts and feelings.

Report Highlights

  • The December 2019 edition of Scientific American identified Social Robots as one of the Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2019, suggested as “world-changing technologies that are poised to rattle the status quo.”
  • Benefits of social robots are being demonstrated with people in the assisted living setting, including conversation, empathy and affection, as well as direct health assistance, such as medication reminders and symptom detection, are concrete.
  • Companies pursuing the development and sale of social robots as well as investors should carefully review the potential risks associated with the harms that may be encountered along with the potential rewards.

“Because social robots are designed to create an emotional connection with humans, they are generally not found in an industrial environment,” write BCC analysts. “Certainly, collaborative robots interact with humans and engage with people, but typically not on an emotional level. Some of the more human-like robots are currently specifically used for research purposes. They could eventually fulfill roles in professional services as well as personal/domestic purposes.”
