Air Quality Monitoring Markets Growing Worldwide
May 15, 2017
Wellesley, Mass., May 15, 2017 – A new report by BCC Research predicts sales growth nearing 9 percent in air-quality monitoring systems worldwide as countries pursue environmental improvements and declining costs of these devices. North America has traditionally been the lead market for monitoring outdoor air conditions, however, the urban growth of China and India with construction, vehicle traffic and bigger-picture climate impact, indicates those regions will see expansion of air monitoring over the next five years.
BCC Research's GROWING MARKETS FOR AIR QUALITY MONITORS: CHINA, NORTH AMERICA, EUROPE AND DEVELOPING MARKETSanticipates $5.9 billion in global spending by 2021, reflecting an 8.8 percent CAGR. The current market is estimated at $3.5 billion per year.
Companies in these markets include incumbents Emerson Electric Co., 3M Corp. and Merck among global corporations. Emerging players with new technologies include Oizom in India and EON Products, Inc. in the U.S. Both are creating handheld personal air monitor that report pollution exposure.
Research Highlights
- Outdoor air monitoring as a category, could see annual growth as high as 10.7% in some regions.
- Global urban air pollution increased by over 8% in the years 2008-13.
- Premature deaths caused by air pollution are expected to increase from 3 million in 2010 to 9 million by 2060 at current levels.
“Internet of Things sensors and networks are enabling greater connectivity, at lower costs, so more people and government agencies are able to monitor environmental conditions. Indoor air purifiers and outdoor reporting devices will be used more widely," says Kevin Fitzgerald, BCC Research editorial director. "The detection of pollutants is getting more sensitive and governments are increasingly pro-active in warning citizens about smog, or taking steps to reduce airborne particles.”
Pollution and Public Health Issues
Both chemical particles and natural pollutants, such as dust, affect a growing number of metropolitan areas worldwide. Significant health impacts such as asthma are related to air pollution with hazards for pregnant women and weakened ill residents. Broad-based national policies in China and India are aimed at reducing pollution using monitoring systems.
