Wellesley, Mass., Jul 7, 2016 – Ultrafiltration (UF) technology continues to grow impressively for a mature technology due to factors such as operational simplicity, regulatory push and continual discovery of use-cases. Ultrafiltration is a separation methodology based on the principles of membrane operation. It relies on membranes, natural or man-made thin-films or sheets, to separate the desirable components from the undesirable ones. Ultrafiltration membrane pore sizes have a specific range, extending from 10 angstroms to 1,000 angstroms, or 0.005 microns to 0.1 micron.
The global market for UF membranes is expected to grow at a five-year CAGR of 6.9% from 2016 to 2021, increasing to nearly $4.6 billion in 2021. The hemodialysis category, the largest segment, should from $1.4 billion in 2016 to nearly $2 billion in 2021 on a five-year CAGR of 6.6%. The biopharmaceuticals category is expected to grow from $345 million in 2016 to $602 million in 2021 at a five-year CAGR of 11.8%.
For wastewater, the technology offers two primary advantages over conventional treatment: the ability to eliminate the use of chlorine and the ability to enable the reuse of wastewater. The exclusion of chlorine in wastewater treatment allows the discharge of a stream that does not contain potentially harmful compounds that result from chlorine disinfection. The potential to reuse wastewater in industrial, agricultural and indirect potable applications is a major boon to world regions with diminishing water supplies.
The development of biosimilar drugs opens up the adoption of membrane separation technologies in the pharmaceutical domain. Regulatory approvals associated with these drugs are process-intensive, with regulators veritably competing with each other to extract maximum possible levels of transparency from pharmaceutical manufacturers. This change of mind of regulatory agencies bodes well for ultrafiltration membrane stakeholders. The superior growth rates forecast against this end-use application accurately reflect the exciting potential unleashed by this relatively new market within the market.
Ultrafiltration technologies have also gained market share in areas of pre-treatment processes associated with reverse osmosis induced desalination techniques. In several countries across the globe, increasing population without concurrent increase in the availability of potable water resources is likely to prompt planners to examine reverse osmosis more seriously.
