Water Softeners to Play Important Role in Global Water Supply
October 31, 2018
WELLESLEY, Mass., October 31, 2018–Clean water is, and will continue to be, of great importance as the global population rises, demanding more of this precious resource. According to the BCC Research report Water Softeners: Global Markets, the importance of water softenersin maintaining the global water supply is increasing. The demand from both developed and developing countries and their industrial growth is contributing to the overall expansion of the worldwide water softener market.
Hard water occurs with high levels of calcium and magnesium, and water softeners work to remove these minerals. Because of the growing health concerns and disadvantages of hard water, water treatment equipment manufacturers and suppliers are increasingly interested in the water softener market.
The market for water softeners is segmented based on type (salt-based, salt-free, magnetic and others), end-use sectors (residential, commercial and industrial), and geographic regions (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the rest of the world). This report finds that the global market for water softeners is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7%, reaching over $8.7 billion by 2023.
Research Highlights
- Growth is expected to be strongest in the developing world, with countries such as China and India undergoing growth greater than the global average. Increased demand will also be seen in developed countries due to stringent government regulations and the consequent increase in the usage of water softeners.
- North America is the largest regional market for water softeners and has high growth potential, driven by growing end-use sectors such as residential, commercial and industrial. Additional drivers include the rapidly growing power generation, manufacturing, and oil and gas industries.
- Magnetic water softeners and other salt-free water softening technologies, such as reverse osmosis (RO), are experiencing reasonably good growth due to them causing less pollution, requiring less maintenance, and being less costly.
“The market for water softening systems is changing, and many companies are investing in new technologies as alternatives to traditional softeners,” the report states. “Scientists around the world are developing alternatives to ion exchange water softeners, resulting in products such as salt-less softeners and salt-free conditioners.”
