One way to think of Voxels is that they necessarily convey more data than pixels through integration spatial information, as a function of data capture. While not by any means new, their spread from simple imaging, through 3D printing, and on into Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) for satellites, and autonomous vehicle use, is a truly exciting progression.

Traditional data representations such as raster grid, point clouds and triangulated irregular networks, can all be improved depending on the end goals in mind – speed versus detail, or long term storage for reference versus geo-tracking ephemerae. Voxels are the kind of in-house secret sauce making huge differences behind the scenes, that go unrecognized unless marketing teams are given instructions to leverage the performance based advantages the confer.
