INTRODUCTION

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The objective of this study is to present an analysis of the global powder coating market. Our goal was to determine the current status of the powder coating industry and assess its growth potential from 2007 to 2008 and then from 2008 to 2013. Basically, BCC Research is examining the global powder coating market to capture the full implementation of its potential.

REASONS FOR DOING THIS STUDY

Powder coating technology has been available for almost 50 years. Most coatings are thermosets or thermoplastics with the former comprising the vast majority of powder coating materials. The growth of this technology has been strong over the past few decades and new applications were developed for both industrial and consumer products.

A key advantage of powder coating is the absence of any solvents and their volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that impact the environment. This environmental advantage opened the way to additional applications.

Powder coating has been maturing and lost ground in 2001. The industry recovered in 2002 and resumed most of its growth. BCC Research was interested to see if powder coating would face saturated markets and slow its growth. The economic events of late 2007 and 2008 have impacted the business and we wanted to examine its chances for continued growth. We also wanted to examine technological progress and assess the industry’s future potential.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

BCC Research assembled a study of the key types of powder coatings used by six major industry groups. We present an overview of powder coating technologies and future trends, along with a global industry structure, including leading powder coating manufacturers, application equipment makers and independent coaters. A review of the powder coating industry’s competitiveness is also provided. Within each industry, there is an overview of key applications, the advantages of using powder coatings, and an analysis of market factors that will impact demand, plus estimated shipments for 2008 and 2013.
This study will be of interest to those in the powder coating business, those contemplating entry into it or becoming an independent coater, and those dealing with products that must have a surface modification of some kind. A variety of products are powder coated with the intent of making them more durable, less susceptible to mars and scratches, more colorful or just more attractive.

SCOPE OF REPORT

This study includes global companies who manufacture powder coatings, make raw material for them, and manufacture application machinery such as powder booths and fluidized beds, and independent coaters. It also focuses on companies that make automobiles, appliances, outdoor furniture, lawn and garden equipment, electrical and electronic equipment. It also includes architects, builders and the construction industry plus non-metal products, a relatively new addition to powder coating.

BCC Research analyzes the powder coating industry on a global basis, including manufacturing capability and consumption by regional markets. This study also looks at industry and trade associations, government standards and other important factors relating to the success of powder coating.

Companies vital to the industry are listed and more than 30 major companies are analyzed in depth. Where applicable, company trends are also included.

METHODOLOGY

BCC Research presents an analysis of the key powder coatings used by six major industries and the advantages and applications resulting from them. We look at material properties, advantages to each industry, demand factors, competition, and other related information. Based on BCC Research surveys, we analyze the potential market for each industry, report 2007 shipments, and forecast shipments from 2008 to 2013. Estimated value is what manufacturers have paid in undepreciated 2008 dollars. The report also analyzes the value of shipments by type of powder material.

INFORMATION SOURCES

We interviewed approximately 130 companies to obtain data for this study. Included were powder manufacturers, raw material makers, engineers, chemists, economists, executives, operating personnel, independent coaters, and end-users of powder coated products. Information for this report was also derived from government and industry trade sources, trade publications and financial reports.

ANALYST'S CREDENTIALS

Bob Moran has worked as a technology market analyst and technology writer for more than 20 years, and is the author of numerous BCC Research reports. He has authored reports covering thin film deposition, photovoltaic/solar technology, electronic displays and display materials, electronic gaming, magnetic and optical storage, surface modification of polymers, and other technology topics. He has also served as the editor of BCC Research publications including Display Industry News and Micro and Nanotechnology.
